Gold shipments to the UK jumped 154% in March, then fell 50% in April. July fell 53% and August rose 116%: the data show alternating lots, not a trend.
In March 2026, the pace of Brazilian gold exports to the United Kingdom changed sign. The prior pace was -48.6% month over month. March's was +154%. The gap between the two readings is 202.2 percentage points, and that inflection is the hook of this story: not the level of sales, but how fast it is changing. The following months are now out, and they call for caution with the word "turnaround". Month-over-month comparison does not strip out seasonality, and the March rebound came right after a slump, which gives the math a low base. In a single destination, a swing this size usually says more about the calendar of cargoes than about the buyer's demand. That is why the later months matter as much as the event itself.
A simple example shows the base effect. Take an index of 100 before the February drop. After the 48.6% fall, the series sits near 51. After the 154% rise, it climbs to about 131. The result is above the starting point, but by a far smaller margin than +154% suggests on its own. In value, March totaled US$ 140.5 million, against US$ 55.4 million in February and US$ 107.7 million in January. Acceleration and growth, then, are not the same thing. Shipped volume rose 160.2% in March, while the price per kg stayed 2.5% below February's: the jump came from quantities, not from the quote. February's slump set the stage for March's jump, and the two moves have to be read together.
The April to August 2026 data answer what was open in March. In April, sales fell back to US$ 70.2 million, a 50.0% drop from March. In May, they rose 33.2%, to US$ 93.5 million. In June, the gain was 4.4%, to US$ 97.6 million. In July, value fell 53.0%, to US$ 45.8 million, the lowest of the December 2025 to August 2026 series, alongside February. In August, there was another jump of 116.2%, to US$ 99.1 million. Volume tracked value month by month: -46.5% in April, +35.6% in May, +12.3% in June, -50.2% in July and +105.0% in August.
The pattern is one of alternating lots, not a trend. March remains the largest monthly value of this period, and August, at US$ 99.1 million, stayed 29.4% below it. From January to August, the average was US$ 88.7 million a month. The spread between the weakest and strongest month was about threefold, from US$ 45.8 million in July to US$ 140.5 million in March. The price per kilogram also eased through the year: from US$ 159,272 per kg in March to US$ 135,055 per kg in August. So March's jump did not become a new plateau. Weak months in February, April and July alternate with stronger ones.
The United Kingdom is a peculiar destination for Brazilian gold. London is one of the world's main centers for trading, refining and storing gold bars, and part of what arrives there serves financial operations, not industrial use or jewelry. That makes the series lumpy: the metal leaves in large, infrequent lots, and one cargo more or less can change a whole month. This is the first possible engine, the calendar of shipments. The second is the international gold price, which changes value without moving volume. The third is currency. None of the three is measured in the data, so they stand only as hypotheses. The gold export dashboard shows other destinations and helps separate a UK-specific move from a product-wide one.
From September, watch whether the monthly value settles near the year's average or keeps alternating between strong and weak months, and whether the price per kilogram keeps falling.
